How to Quit Smoking as Your New Year’s Resolution

For many, the end of the year is a great time to reflect and plan for future changes to make in life. For those who smoke, a common New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking on or around January 1st. The key to success and keeping this resolution is to plan ahead. Use these 5 tips as a guide through the quit journey.

  1. Choose a Quit Smoking Date

The best quit date will vary for each person. Decide whether to quit smoking cold turkey or gradually reduce the number of cigarettes smoked until the quit date.

  2. Decide on a Quit Smoking Replacement Therapy

Otherwise known as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), NRT’s assist in the quit smoking process by easing the transition of reducing and eliminating the amount of nicotine in the bloodstream. Many NRT’s are available over the counter such as nicotine gum, nicotine patches, and nicotine lozenges. Talk to a primary care physician before starting any cessation aids.

  3. Share Your Quit Smoking New Year’s Resolution

The journey to living a smoke-free life can be challenging, but it can be more bearable with support and encouragement. Think of practical ways in which others can help along the way. In addition to family and friends, there are many web forums dedicated to those attempting to quit smoking. Connect with our Facebook page for more support and information: https://www.facebook.com/1866newlung.

  4. Call a Tobacco Quit-Line

Those living in the U.S. can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW to connect directly to the State quit-line. Individuals in Orange County, CA can call 1-866-NEW-LUNG (1-866-639-5864). Callers can receive information and advice from counselors trained specifically to help people quit. In many cases, quit-lines offer free quit smoking medications and/or NRTs.

  5. Read Up on Quitting Smoking

There are many great resources available online to help quit smoking and quit vaping. Take a look at the CDC Smoking and Tobacco Use website for fast facts and additional tips and tools.

No matter what stage in the quit journey, remember that it often takes several attempts before a successful quit attempt. Set a New Year’s resolution to quit smoking, and ring in the New Year happier and healthier without tobacco.

12 Tips to Quit Smoking on January 1st

Learn what it takes to quit smoking in the upcoming New Year and what to expect in the process. Take advantage of the resources and support available in the local community or discuss options with a doctor.

  1. Don’t Let Fear Paralyze You

Gut-wrenching fear is a normal feeling that comes when the quit day arrives. Don’t let fear get in the way before actually quitting. Push through when the time comes. The rewards of quitting await those who make an effort to quit.

  2. Use a Quit Journal

List specific reasons for quitting. Take a look at an ex-smoker’s list of the pros and cons of smoking and use it for inspiration on making a detailed list of your own.

  3. Find a Shoulder to Lean On

It is important to find encouragement and comfort from others who can provide support. Support can come from family, friends, and online support forums.

  4. Eat Smart

Quitting smoking can cause shock. When quitting, the absence of tobacco will be apparent. Often times, smoking is replaced with eating. A few treats are fine, but try to keep healthy food within reach.

  5. Drink Water

Water helps flush residual toxins from the system and helps reduce cravings to smoke. Hydration helps when going through nicotine withdrawal.

  6. Get Your Beauty Sleep

Insomnia can be a symptom of nicotine withdrawal. However, cravings will seem stronger with a lack of sleep due to the lack of energy to deal with each craving.

  7. Get Moving

Exercise will help minimize weight gain while creating endorphins, which will provide a feel-good boost. Try a low-impact activity such as taking a 15-minute walk around the block.

  8. Renew Resolve Daily

Determination to quit smoking is built one day at a time. Each smoke-free day is a day to grow stronger. Trust the process and know that the body is healing.

  9. Be a Sponge

Read everything about the dangers of smoking. Watch videos and look at pictures of the health effects of smoking if it resonates with you. It can help make the mental shift necessary to quit smoking successfully.

  10. Accept and Let It Go

Embrace cravings to smoke as they come. Don’t fight them. Most cravings last three to five minutes. Take each craving as a sign that the body is healing.

  11. Don’t Fall for Faulty Thinking

Avoid sabotaging yourself. Choose not to smoke because it is a challenging addiction. Pay attention to the positive frame of mind.

  12. Be Patient

Rome wasn’t built in a day. Work to undo 20 or more years of old patterns and replace them with healthier choices. Each day that is smoke-free is a day closer to lasting freedom.
